Well, I suppose most of you have followed the story on the rape and murder of Canny Ong in the papers lately (if not, read it here)…
The body dumpsite and the place she was raped and murdered is quite near my house in KL and I travel on that stretch of road almost every day when I’m in KL… eek!
What disturbed me the most is how the 2 police officers who first discovered the suspect and the victim in their Proton Tiara in Kelana Jaya… what happened was a normal routine patrol by the 2 officers, saw the car, and approached them for identifications… the suspect guy panicked and just gave them both Canny and his identity card (IC) to the officers and sped off… quoted from the news in today’s The Star (link above):
At about midnight, two policemen conducting special rounds on a motorcycle spotted the Proton Tiara.
They asked the driver for his identity card.
Asked why police did not detain the driver at the time, SAC Abu Bakar replied:
“The detectives approached the car and asked the driver what he was doing before asking him to produce his identity card.
“The man handed over his and Canny’s identity cards.”
He said the driver sped off as one of the detectives was jotting down the details.
SAC Abu Bakar said the police were unaware of the abduction in Bangsar – Canny’s family were then in the midst of lodging a report with the Brickfields police.
The two detectives went back to the Kelana Jaya station to lodge a report and handed over the two identity cards to their superiors.
About 90 mins after that happened, Canny was raped and murdered in the construction area around Old Klang Road near Taman Dato Harun…
In my opinion, the police could be a bit more competent in this matter… rather than solving murder cases, Canny could’ve been saved… Merely reporting about the “IC” incident back at the station is not enough… cmon, think about it, some idiot gave you 2 ICs and then sped off… definitely something smells fishy right? Who in the sane mind would leave the IC to the police and speed off?
How come they don’t radio to HQ and maybe find out what the hell is going on with that car? Aren’t they observant enough to notice the car plate number?
If only they’ve acted upon the incident earlier, I’d say there’s a high chance that Canny can be saved… sigh… what’s your comment on this?

but they rather stop that poor guy across the street who was driving and yakking on the handphone at the same time for some grease on their palm than to be a hero….

Aiyoh, Gavin - show some respect lah.
AuYong - I agree with you. The police could’ve done better. Maybe the fact that they were in plain clothes meant they were “off duty” so otak up there also “off duty”. Whatever happened to the saying “Once a policeman, always a policeman”, or whatever your profession happens to be.
*sigh*

Any laymen could not believe what they read in the papers, just absurd!! Condolence to Canny’s family especially to Brendon, her parents and sisters, may God be with them to comfort them. Just pray for them.

that’s what happens when your police corps is comprised of uneducated low paid idiots. Why is the trial focusing, among other things, what she was wearing when she was with the perpetrator? What the fuck does that got to do with anything? SO just cos she wore off shoulder means she ‘deserves’ getting raped and killed? Fuck! Says a lot about the ignorance and prejudice of our still very patriachal society !
If the police and authorities don’t get off their butts and prevent this kind of shit happening, they better expect a lot more killings like the Ong case..

not only police men are absured these days…. even the writers.
im sure all of u wud hv read the malay mail jan 13th tues 2004.
they hv put a picture of azizam smiling to glory.
wat i dont understand is….what is the necesity to put a picture of someone smiling. isnt this a murder trial… is it somethg to be laughed about.
im sure they have better pictures to cover the headlines of a page..it was totally unnecessary.
imagine the pain the family has to go through.
just think about it for a moment…. if one of our family memeber”s were on this scene.. will we eccept if they had published a face of a smiling idiot who stole a bag and handphone on a headlines of a paper…???????

Mandy…
All the best for your oral presentation. Luckily it was only oral, coz if it’s a written one, I’m sure you’ll flunk it well with the way you wrote your comment above.
