Quote of the Day - Proton Gen.2…
… read this while following Jeff Ooi’s link to The Star Online’s Motoring Review of the Proton Gen.2, the WRM launched today…
QUOTE:
“You can say that it’s a bit like how Windows continuously keeps on upgrading their software for the better. We like to think that the Proton Waja has ride and handling version 1.0 while Gen.2 has ride and handling version 2.0,” said Proton’s head of Research and Development, Tunku Azizan Tunku Ahmad.
ROTFLMAO!
If the car crashes as often as Windows, I’m sure not much people would be interested in the car… LOL!
Anyway, it does look good, see pix below… except for the area where there normally should be a glove compartment… I remember once reading in a blog somewhere that the idea of omitting of the glove compartment was planned after the Iswara batches stumbled into problems with the glove compartment’s lock and thus, the easy way out was to just remove the glove compartment and leave it with a slot instead… now… how on earth am I gonna conceal my revolver… err… I mean sunglasses and all?

Overall, the car seems to be pleasing to the eye especially the rear. But the thing that stood out like a sore thumb was the headlamp. The glass cover is ok, but the inside of it is too plasticky for my liking. It’s so el-cheapo,almost like the kind of plastic toys we use to get during the 70’s and early 80’s.

I went twice to two different showrooms.
The design of the car is finally a major improvement over the other proton models.
BUT, the built quality and the workmanship are still inferior. just look at the door for example, look at section that is after the trim board and nearer to the hinge. you can actually see the pieces of metal was glue or soldered together and it was sooooo obvious. the rubber list used on the glasses were also poorly done.
i can list down a few more and i dont think the quality is on par with the selling price.

the handle for the door opener inside feels like so frigile… if pull a little bit harder.. i think it will surely break…
some more the outside one.. the rubber was not properly done.. when u pull the handle to open the door.. u will see that the rubber will also follow the handle..
chirst… they should hv do it better… so ppl will admire it…
b4 this i was unpatient to look at the new car.. but now.. i hv a 2nd thought..

the gen 2 is supposed to be a wira replacement model but ironically it has turned into a wira replaced model. this is because of the slow production, the higher price.
so gen 2 is definitely going into another disaster as it faces challenge from its own perodua and wira. Others will go for the more reliable waja. At the same time, we dont know how much mitsubishi contributes to gen 2 . it is coincidental when mitsubishi pull out of proton , gen 2 production slowed.
on the other hand , thailand is becoming the car centre of the east , ironically, they dont even need a national car.

It’s a beaut… well done proton.

it is said the gen 2 is delayed because an australia company has problem with supplying the cylinder heads.
there is only one company in australia-ford and holden and they really stuff up their engines.
but why do we need them when it is claimed the car is 100 % local and we will save money.
just another joke if the cylinder does not arrive.

Hey, ppl. C’mmon la. Without Proton, Malaysia will still be thought of a country which still is under developed, just like Indon. Anyway, wut Das says ain’t through. Analysts say that a new car model will only reap in sum rewards after the 200 000th car. So, lets giv um a couple of yrs. Other analysts say that to be a succesfull national car maker, the nation has to hv a min population of 50 million, compared to our 228 or so mill, i think Proton is doing splendidly. Anyway the contract for the Aussie cylinder heads were canceled a week or so ago(today is 2-10-04) to give Malaysian comp’s a chance. Gen 2 is doing pretty well you know, just recently Proton changed the booking rate from 3000 to 500 and the waiting period from 3-4 months to 4-5 weeks, and the floodgates suddenly opened. The orders for the beauty hit 14000 last week, no one knows where the number stands now. There are 2 new models cumin, SRM(Satria rep. mod.) this yr and TRM(Tiara rep. mod.) nxt. The TRM is supposed to hv triptronic gear shift, it cant get any better then that can it.

Dear Ala Giri,
when they say 50 million people.. I think they mean in a ‘open’ market. not one where the competition is taxed.
Personally I must disaprove of you looking down on Indonesia. Indonesia is said to be poor because the majority of the people are.. but that does mean there are no rich people here and that it does not have modern facilities.
and Indonesia is Also capable of assembling cars… just like Proton did (and still is doing), not to mention Perodua..
Speaking of Perodua… there is a Daihatsu assembly plant here which assesmbles the Daihatsu mira (with majority local content)… known as the Kancil in malaysia. At least here they have the integrity to still call the car a daihatsu.
Proton plans to open a factory here, with a 50 - 50 partnership with a local company.. maybe the indonesians should change the name of the car to something else. Hey if Perodua and Naza can do it, why not they?
I used to think proton was a real good idea and was really happy when the govenrnment sold they share.. wow, I thought that proton is going to come up with some really good stuff now… especially now that they are ‘privatised’.
Proton Iswara came in 1992, Proton Wira came in 1993.. guess what .. they are still here!
even the Czech Republic updates their models more often.
Countries like India do things like that.. the Hindustan Ambasador (for example). What makes you think that driving a 10 year old mitsubishi lancer will make people think our country is developed.
the way I see it.. the Gen 2 and gang are a last ditch effort to not go down in flames (think AFTA) by a company that just got sloppy.
if I have offended anyone .. my apologies.
These are just my 2 cents.
thanks
ps: Is the Proton Wira still really in production? I surfed into the EON website and its still up for sale.

Wow Fred, digging up old posts to comment eh?
Well, just to answer your question - Proton Wira is still in production. With the lack of competency in coming up with better cars, there are people who rather get a Wira than to risk it all with a Gen2 or Waja.
As for me, enough is enough on national cars, my next car is definitely not a Proton or Perodua…

the car is good. i have gen2 and i am happy

The best one in malaysian, more beautiful than others car and the colour very shape>>.. ha ha

after two years, sadly to say instead of replacing wira, wira still outsold gen 2. hencewira has turned into the gen 2 replacement model.
this phenomenon of being replaced by an older model happens only in malaysia

Actually Waja is the best seller.

I own a gen 2. I would say I give 60% rate (meaning…in good condotion)to the car. First obvious flaw, the absorber. It creeks when operated on bumpy road not to mention when we drive with 1st n 2nd. gear. Most other pp who went to service (at EON service) their gen 2 admitted have to replaced the absorbers right after the warranty period ended. Is this accidental or intentional? Other flaws..the rubber lining at the door, exhaust pipe, the bonnet door(very difficult to close) and the interior deco. Aside from that, the car would appease us of its pleasant exterior. If you can afford imported cars, BETTER not buy this.

i have decided to get a Gen2 as i LIKE the way it is.Sometimes i wonder,if a certain product ain’t good then why do u see ppl using it and also, more new ones are being purchased and actually driven? is it because the buyers are just plain dumb asses? I DONT THINK SO! guys, the Gen2 was famous for being a problematic car when it comes to the door.I heard from my car dealer that that problem has been rectified and solved. When it comes to engine and all that,u CANNOT expect a 60 thousand dollar worth car to perform like an F1 rite? THINK about it…i hear ppl saying that “aiya,no pickup la!”..this is pure bullshit guys! i’m 26 and i feel that a Gen2 is affordable to me. I dont care about all the critics as i feel that,if u know how to maintain your stuff well then everything should be ok! Lastly, good luck to all the Gen2 owners and see ya all…to those that love to give too many NEGATIVE comments,i have 1 question for u guys..”DO U HAVE A GEN2?”

Biasala bang,
Orang kalau tak tau memang melalut macam tu. Kalau setakat baru dapat Ijazah Kepujian dalam Kejuruteraan saja he he he main jauh2 laaa.
Bagi saya, tiada cacat celanya syarikat kita (PROTON) jangan give-up. Kalau orang complain, kita jangan cepat melenting.
