Applying for International Driving Permit at JPJ Malaysia
So I needed an International Driving Permit. In Malaysia, this can be done either at the JPJ state headquarters (the one in Setapak for WP, Padang Jawa for Selangor) or any AAM branches (only if you’re a member of AAM). All you need is 2 passport-sized photographs, a copy of your NRIC, a copy of your current driving license (must be valid for at least 1 more year from the day you apply for IDP), fill up a form at JPJ and part with RM 150 - in return, you’ll get your IDP processed in about 10 minutes and given to you on the spot. The IDP lasts 1 year - yeap RM 150 for 1 year. Cannot get more than 1 year at one go. For more details, you can visit JPJ’s website.
So I went to JPJ at Setapak yesterday to get it done and renew my license that’s expiring this coming October. Reached there around 11.15am, the number of people at the Driving License department weren’t that bad. Renewed my license and got a new copy with my new ugly photo in it, and then my IDP 10 minutes later. Not too bad in terms of service and wait time…
But the IDP looks very much like a school report card, you know, in those manila card cover!
Here’s the photo of my IDP:

The front cover

The IDP content - list of countries this IDP can be used, the marking of which vehicle class I can drive and exclusions from countries (if any, due to violations) - this information is translated to various foreign languages over the next few pages.

The inside back cover - my particulars and the ugly photo
So yeah, now I’ve the license to thrill drive in most countries around the world!

Beer Brat,
I wouldn’t know for sure - you can check on Australia’s authority websites - but it’s never a bad thing to have your international driving permit whenever you drive out of the country anyway.
If you’re renting a car, definitely the car rental company would want to see something legit for international use, so I don’t suppose your Malaysian driving license works - but then again, YMMV

Beer Brat,
I think you do not need an IDP to rent a car in australia. My sworn brother studies in Perth and he don’t even need an IDP to drive there.
He told me that he was stopped once by the highway patrol for routine check and he just shows he Singapore Driving License and they didn’t make any fuss about it either.

I am currently in the UK. Does anyone know if I can ask somebody else to get the international driving permit from JPJ on my behalf or not?

Rachel, nope… you need to apply in-person. That’s as far as I know. Only 2 places you can apply it from, JPJ state headquarters and AAM offices (AAM only provide this service to their members only, bleah).
You might as well check with the UK transport authority if your Malaysian driving license is sufficient to drive in UK or not.

Thank you for the info. That is bad for me because I am not going back to Malaysia in the near future and I need it to rent a car in USA soon (Or you have any experience to get a car without IDP in USA?). In UK, we can only drive in the first year but thereafter a British Driving License is needed in which we need to go through theoretical test and driving test all over again. Singaporeans can exchange theirs straightaway

I have a UK driving license and have been driving for 4 years. My Malaysian license is due for renewal (27/05/06) after 5 years. I came back to Malaysia in 2001 and renewed it. I do not want to give up my Malaysian license because I can drive when I visit.Where in UK can I renew my license.
thank you.

Harap maaf,

everyone, this is not Kaunter Pertanyaan JPJ. This is a personal blog to share information, not a place for u to DEMAND answers. For all that, pls visit JPJ’s official website www.jpj.gov.my
Or give a phone call to JPJ’s friendly hotline. I’m sure u can find that number on the website too.
Terima Kasih.
